Marshall Joos is an organist, pianist, and composer based in New England. Most recently, he received Second Prize in the Poister Organ Competition and won First Prize in the 2023 Regional Competition for Young Organists (RCYO), earning the title of “Rising Star” from the AGO. He has also been awarded the prestigious Pogorzelski-Yankee Memorial Scholarship by the American Guild of Organists (AGO). In 2021, he was featured on NPR’s From the Top (Episode 396) and earned the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. He was the 2021 Boston Chapter winner of the Regional Competition for Young Organists and went on to receive Second Prize in the Northeast Regional Competition for Young Organists. He was also the 2021 recipient of the Methuen Memorial Music Hall Scholarship, awarded to graduating seniors pursuing a music degree. Marshall is a two-time recipient of the Penn Brown Scholarship for Advanced Organ Studies. In 2019, he won First Prize in the Boston Chapter of the Regional Competition for Young Organists (RCYO), went on to receive Second Prize at the Northeast Regional Convention in Buffalo, New York, and was the First Prize winner of the L. Cameron Johnson Scholarship Competition in Storrs, Connecticut.
Marshall has enjoyed performing throughout New England and Texas, most notably on the organs at Methuen Memorial Music Hall (Methuen, MA), the Kotzschmar Organ at Merrill Auditorium (Portland, ME), the Fisk organ at the historic Old West Church (Boston, MA), St. Martin’s Episcopal Church (Houston, TX), Christ the King Lutheran Church (Houston, TX), South Main Baptist Church (Houston, TX), the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (Houston, TX), First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth (Fort Worth, TX), and the beautiful Fisk-Rosales organ at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
Marshall is a second-year master’s student at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, pursuing a degree in Music Composition. In 2025, he graduated from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance under the tutelage of Professor Ken Cowan. He began organ lessons at the age of ten under Lorrie Dodson and continued his studies with Christian Lane from 2018 to 2021.
He has also collaborated frequently with the Boston University choral ensembles and conducting studios as a collaborative pianist, organist, and composer, and has been featured in multiple concerts throughout Boston with Boston University’s choral ensembles. His compositions have been premiered by Sound Icon Ensemble in Boston and also internationally at the International Music Festival in Popayán, Colombia, where the Boston University Chamber Choir performed one of his a cappella works. When he is home in New Hampshire, Marshall plays organ and piano at Heritage Baptist Church in Dover.
